Uncle Ricky's Sugar-free Lemonade!

Come and check out our new blog!

http://theecohousewives.wordpress.com

Things are starting to get HOT here; it was +22 C yesterday here, which a pretty hot day for May here! And we are scheduled for even more of it. YAY!

One of my favourite ways to cool off on a hot day is lemonade. But powder mixes are full of sugar, and even homemade lemonade can have a lot in it. But then I went to Vancouver to visit family and friends, and enjoyed my Uncle Rick's sugar-free lemonade. He has been playing around with making his own drinks and pop at home, and I got to enjoy this tasty concoction.

I made myself a batch the other day and LOVED it! Now, even though it is sugar-free, it isn't full of the nasty fake sugars like aspartame or Splenda/sucralose. Instead, it is sweetened with stevia (for more info on this lovely plant, check out my post!)

So without further ado:

Uncle Ricky's Sugar-free Lemonade

1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
Add water to total 2 litres
Stir in 2 tsp of stevia powder (more to taste, if desired)

Pretty simple hey? Feel free to switch it up, add in some orange juice, some lime juice, whatever, as long as your squeezed juices measure to one cup total.

The self mixing jug and my hand-held citrus juicer-tools of the trade!
Sit back, take a sip and ahhhhhhhhhhhh...relax!

Man Stuff

Come and check out our new blog!

http://theecohousewives.wordpress.com

If your husband goes and works up North for a couple of years, he might just come home with the following:

- A new cowboy hat
- Some new cowboy boots
- A jean jacket (I couldn't even photograph this - and my city girl heart is so happy he hasn't worn it yet)
- An appreciation for Clamato in his beer
- A freezer full of moose meat
- A cribbage board made from a small moose antler
- A huge moose rack

So what I am saying is, he came back to me with a whole bunch of country boy stuff. But I am not one to complain - I love moose meat, and I am just enough of a redneck to love that cribbage board. Come one people, it was handmade in the 70's - it's vintage folk art, in my book. And I love cribbage.

At this point, I am so happy to have him home for good, he could have brought almost anything home and I would have been okay with it. Almost. Other than that jean jacket...

Rhubarb-palooza

Come and check out our new blog!

http://theecohousewives.wordpress.com

I know, I love a corny blog post title. What can I say? I'm still a bit of a loser, even though the braces have been off for over 10 years...

ANYWAY! It has been raining here in southern Alberta so much, I was waiting for someone to take my dog away so that after the flood daschunds have a chance to procreate. There I go again, loser. Anyway, that much rain was proof positive that my struggling plants in past years were no one's fault but mine. Clearly I was not watering enough. I have other friends who agree. it's like we all know what gardening on the West Coast feels like. Sort of. Not really. Who are we kidding here, this is prairie land.

But with all that rain, my rhubarb was VERY happy. Earlier in the spring, I had already yanked out a bunch of stalks to make the amazing rhubarb cake recipe I got from the Foodess, but now my rhubarb had grown with a vengeance. I forgot to take a before picture - but look at the pile of rhubarb stalks - and look at that pile of leaves (and look how tiny my push mower looks beside it!) And then after pulling out probably half of what was growing like a mad person, I still have that huge rhubarb plant. So it was time to get down to rhubarb-y business. And I owed a friend and her hubby rhubarb crumble since he helped me load and unload a very heavy cement urn planter I bought second-hand, and my hubby was away. (yes, I say hubby, and yes, I buy astronomically heavy second-hand planters that even two women were incapable of budging...)

After ripping out all those stalks!
But I digress - the point is, I had a ton of rhubarb and the urge to try something new. So I picked up my pile of rhubarb stalks...and then went back and picked the ones off the ground that had fallen on my way inside. Rhubarb piles are like laundry...some of the socks and undies always fall out when you are carrying the laundry pile. Sorry for saying undies while discussing food...

For the first rhubarb recipe - I had been told that rhubarb juice is delish, but I had never made it. In fact, I had never even tasted it! How could I, lover of all things sweet and sour, have missed out! So I googled it, and it was EASY! I am going to make this every day! So if you want to make your own - check out the recipe below. And the colour! It looks like kool-aid but tastes like HEAVEN.

Rhubarb Juice:

2 ½ lbs rhubarb, cut into 1 inch chunks
2 Quarts of water
3 cups sugar
Juice of 2 lemons

Cook the rhubarb and water on medium heat until soft. Mash rhubarb up with potato masher. Strain. Add sugar and lemon juice. Chill.
*Amazing with gingerale or club soda!!!

And then came the rhubarb crumble. Of course, my favourite person, Martha Stewart, gave this to me personally. And by Martha Stewart, I mean the editors of Everyday Food magazine. And by personally, I mean delivered in the mail. I need to make another one, since this was all eaten by the helpful hubby and I want one of my own, because I like to gorge on food like that.

Rhubarb Crumble:

Crumble:
6 Tb unsalted butter, softened
1/4 cup light brown sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp coarse salt
Beat butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add flour and salt and mix with your hands until large pieces form. Scatter over filling.

Fruit filling:
2 pounds of rhubarb, thinly sliced (about 6 cups)
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
5 tsp cornstarch
1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional)

Combine all ingredients. Place in a 8-inch baking dish (square or round is fine). Bake at 375 for 40-50 minutes, tenting loosely with foil after the first 30 minutes. Let cool 20 minutes before serving.

Last but not least, the Foddess' rhubarb cake. I tweaked it a little and made it into muffins. The recipe is on her website here. I just put it in lined muffin tins and baked for about 25 minutes. YUM! Keep in mind, this cake is very moist, so don't under bake it. Part of these were also given away to a friend's hubby - this one put new brakes in my truck - hooray! Fun food fact - I have met women who don't like rhubarb (criminal!) but never men...who knows...but a man with rhubarb is a happy man.

On a side note, my neighbour then lovingly gifted me with more rhubarb from HIS garden. So I froze it. It will make a lovely dessert next week. I am worn out!

Happy Canada Day and Independence Day to everyone!!!

Adventures in Auction-going!

Come and check out our new blog!

http://theecohousewives.wordpress.com

So this spring/summer, I have discovered a wonderful new hobby! Going to auctions! I go with a good friend from my book club, and we always have a blast!
On a recent trip, we were more adventurous than usual - it has been raining for a few days...and the auction was on an acreage...you guess the rest - it was MUDDY! But what is mud if not the perfect excuse to wear my new plaid rubber boots! And did they ever do the job!
So here's how the day went:

Muddy boots!

9:00 AM - Finally drag my exhausted butt to Robin's place to pick her up - the boots are pristine

9:30 - Arrive at a country garage sale for some pre-auction shopping. I bought some old (yay - smells like mildew!) books - one of which ended up containing pressed flowers - hooray!

10:00 - Arrive at the auction property. It is raining - but easing up - but it is so muddy. I think I reverted to my nine year old self - who doesn't like that slllllllllllllurp sound your rubber boots make in really deep mud?

10:30 - We have officially done "the rounds." There are some promising pieces - both as is and for projects. But right now, they are selling the unbelievable amount of farm items. *yawn*

11:00 - Buy a hot chocolate (man, my feet are getting cold!)

11:15 - Drop my mittens in the mud. And here I thought my feet were going to be the only cold part of my body today...

11:30 - Brave the port-a-potty. Ew.

12:30 - Sneak my wet mittens onto the closed BBQ lid to steam them dry.

12:45 - Buy a burger. And hot chocolate #2

1:00 - Are they ever going to get to the household stuff???

1:30 - Wander aimlessly while sneakily checking out 2 hot farm boys at the auction with their Mama.

3:00 - FINALLY! Time to buy stuff!

3:15 - Crap! I didn't know that magazine rack was being sold!

3:20 - Buy the magazine rack off of a lady who thought I was a crazy person for even wanting it.

3:30 - So this is how this is going - the group today is overspending country folk. I am not paying THAT much for THAT dresser!

3:32 - Wheee! Vintage Samsonite hat box! In pale blue!

4:00 - Peace out - the stuff I wanted is going for ridiculous prices.

But overall, a great day! C'mon, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. And Robin and I could spend hours people watching at auctions! The downside - cute farms boys get nasty looks on their pretty faces when you bid them up on antique vanity dressers their Mama's want to buy. Lesson learned.

But back to the magazine rack. I get why she didn't want it. It was a small slice of ugly. But I saw its potential (That's the word your teacher used when you were crap at school but she knew it was only because you were being so darn lazy).

Here is it, in all its faux-wood, rusted glory (nothing a little steel wool won't fix!)

But then, some white paint, a little scrapbooking paper, and it is cute! Retro lines, some nice  patina on the metal. I love it!

Recycling: My Confession

Come and check out our new blog!

http://theecohousewives.wordpress.com

I have a confession - it hurts to admit that someone who claims to be an "Eco-Housewife" will admit something like this, but here goes...

SOMETIMES I THROW OUT RECYCLABLES.

There it is. And it is gross! But sometimes when the kitchen is really messy, and I see the recycled all piled on the deck, and I just want to get it cleaned up, I throw stuff out. A little cardboard here, a little plastic container there. Hey, I'm not perfect, but it's just not cool. Especially since my community only picks up garbage every two weeks, I really should recycle all I can.

And then it happened! Curbside pickup! Not municipal pickup, but a local lady who charges a great rate to come by once a week to pick up my recyclables. YAY! It suits my busy lifestyle, I can stay on top of the piles of recycling building on my deck, and I can sleep better at night knowing I am lessening my landfill contribution. :)

And then I found out this happens all over the place - in my parents city in BC, in other Alberta communities. Hooray! So all you lazy recyclers have NO EXCUSES!

And I feel better having gotten all of that off my chest! Whew!

Here comes the...sun?

Come and check out our new blog!

http://theecohousewives.wordpress.com

April has finally rolled into place, but one look out my patio door reminds me what is really out there - a ton of work!
Time to strip out all the dead plants from last year, freshen up the bark mulch (seems to be the only way to keep the cat poop away). Time to plan the big projects, and to start plotting where and what flowers to put in.
I am exhausted just looking at it.
Exhausted but excited; every spring is a chance to start fresh. Veggies or flowers? Raised beds? Re-stain the deck?
Now all I need is a nice warm day to get started!

Can It Be True?

Come and check out our new blog!

http://theecohousewives.wordpress.com

It seems like this winter has been taking forever to wrap up, even of it has been the warmest on record for 65 years (fun food fact). But I have been witness to some key signs of spring! Finally!

1. There was a massive June bug in the grocery store parking lot. Actually there were two, but someone had crushed the other one. I was tempted to do the same, but it wasn't hurting me and Mama taught me that was mean.

2. There was a dead gopher on the highway.

3. I had my first official skunk smell on the drive home. No dead body, so someone must have scared the stink right out of it but didn't finish the job. So now I can look forward to the stench of skunk on my drive home from now on...

4. The snow has melted enough for me to see the 4 months of dog poop on my backyard. That will be a treat to clean. Sounds like a job for the man of the house.

5. There are weeds...plural...in my garden. Now if only the flowers would show up.

Is it safe to say that spring is finally here???

Upcycle and Freecycle

Come and check out our new blog!

http://theecohousewives.wordpress.com

So let's clarify a few things:

1. I am a bit of a crap blogger. I post something new once in a blue moon. Sorry, I will try harder.

2. No matter how hard I try to be all Eco-friendly, and run around hugging trees, I refuse to have a nasty ugly home.

3. I am cheap. Like borscht. Like my Mom. It annoys The Husband deeply, but I still make him listen to my coupon escapades.

Insert Freecycle. It is a fantastic network of cheap people who hate to see things go to waste. You know that ugly old recliner in my living room? The one my cat used as a scratching post? I gave it away on Freecycle because no one was going to BUY it. And the lady who picked it up was elated! Win-win! So go google a local Freecycle group-they are everywhere!!!

The downfall to Freecycle? If you aren't careful, you could end up with a home of ugly mismatched furniture people had to give away.
Or...Upcycle it!!! Take for example these cane-back chairs. Splitting leather seats, flaking stain. Ugh. Ly. But I saw what they could be. A couple cans of spray paint, some new cushions and fabric (all costing less than $75) and these chairs are gorgeous! Sometimes you don't even need cushions and stuff, and an ugly coffee table can cost you less to redo than you would pay to eat at Taco Bell. And upcycling won't give you a hot date with your toilet...

So...enough already...here they are, before and after...

A Tale of Two Smellys (A Product Review)

Come and check out our new blog!

http://theecohousewives.wordpress.com

OK, so just one smelly...me.

I much as I hate to admit it, I am a heavy stinker when it comes to...well, my pits (underarms, to the more demure).

I am not one of those people who can go without deodorant (and let's face it, anyone I know who thinks they can...they are wrong...your 'natural scent' is not 'alluring to the ladies.').

But despite the fact that I can't go more than an hour without putting on some deodorant, I was sick of wearing aluminum-based antiperspirants. Without getting into the whole safe/not-safe debate about aluminum in detail, my main reasons for wanting to switch were:

1. Clogging my sweat glands. I don't care what you think, I think it can't be healthy to clog your sweat glands all day every day. Think about it...your sweat glands were created to...sweat...

2. The aluminum-Alzheimer's disease link. Yes, it is yet unproven. But since I had both of my Grandma's suffer from Alzheimer's, I have decided not to take any chances. Not cooking in aluminum pots, no aluminum in my pits. Done and done.

You may have a whole list of your own reasons for wanting to rid your medicine cabinet of antiperspirant. You may think antiperspirant is a gift from the gods to save you from social ruin because you smell like a dirty hippie treeplanter after a week-long plant trip (don't know any treeplanters? Head to Northern BC...you can smell them a mile off).

I, like you, do not want to smell. I don't want to be "the girl who gave up antiperspirant" at work...and I never even told anyone, they just knew.

So I started to test out deodorants. And it was a rough road. There were days when I knew this deodorant wasn't working...and I still had 4 hours of work left.
So I suggest...keep a stick of your tried-and-true close by...in case of a stinktastic emergency. Then once you know there is one you love, you can chuck that pore-clogging, toxic garbage you have been swiping on your underarms until now! Yay!

The Not-So-Natural but Aluminum-Free All the Same:

So I started with baby steps. These were fairly easy to find, they were cheap...you heard me...they were at WalMart.

Soft&Dri aluminumfree

I bought this one in the darling scent "Sweet Bliss," which is a light, slightly perfume-y scent. Nothing crazy. It smelled like deodorant.
It wasn't hugely strong in it's ability to fight my stink. It lasted about 6 hours in that department. but the downside - this baby had ZERO absorption. So if it was hot out, or I was stressed = mega sweaty. So I may not have smelled, but I am still not a fan of sweat rings on my tops. I still have most of my stick left, which goes to show how long I was willing to put up with it.
Out of 10...I give this one a 5...nice scent, stopped some stink, but not amazing.

Adidas cottonTECH+ Absorbent-Deo

If your #1 trigger is cost, this is the aluminum-free choice for you. That is likely why my Mom loves it. Even after I gushed about my top pick (be patient, I will get there), she still chose to use Adidas, since it costs her around $2.50 at WalMart or Superstore. But not only is it cheap, it works remarkably well. The cottonTECH helps absorb excess wetness, there is a range of scents to choose from (okay, a small range - maybe 3), and it lasts for most of the day. Basically, if you are going dancing after work, give it another quick application.
Out of 10...this one gets a 7-8...the only downside is it is still fairly chemical-based and it does leave slight white marks.

So although the Adidas was becoming my fall-back, I did want to give some other more natural options a try...

The Hippy-Dippy 'Natural' Options:

I wanted something with more natural ingredients - not simply aluminum-free.

Lush's "Aromarant"

So to start, I LOVE Lush. I cannot say enough good things about them. I am obsessed with their bath bombs, lotions, face wash, etc. It is great stuff! You know what else I love about Lush? They will give you a sample of their solid deodorant bar and you don't have to pay to find out it doesn't work for you at all.
I didn't like holding the bar to put it on and getting it on my fingers (picky, picky, I know!)...I didn't like how I felt I had to push really hard to even get any onto my pits...and the biggest one...I didn't like stinking. I know, right? That's such a small issue! Ummm...no.
So out of 10...I give Lush's "Aromarant" an E for effort...sorry.

Tom's Of Maine Natural - Original - Deodorant

So this bad-boy claimed it uses hops to inhibit growth of odour-causing bacteria, and is chock full of other beautiful and natural ingredients.
Normally Tom's makes great stuff. They are a pretty big name in the natural world. You can even buy their stuff at WalMart. I KNOW! Even though it is about double the cost of the Adidas. But I was excited - a natural deodorant that I don't have to make a special trip for - YES!!! But then... NOOOOOOOOO!!! Initially I was excited - I had bought Honeysuckle Rose. It smelled like Climb On! - a super moisturizing lotion Colin and I use after rock climbing. It smells like a clean, citrus-y hippy. I love it. But after half a day... I smelled like...well, those treeplanters I spoke about earlier. It was not good. It was really not good during hot yoga. I will take a moment to apologize to everyone around me. We were all sweaty, we all smelled. But I smelled the worst. Or at least I feel like I did.
And here's the worst part...I kept trying! I loved the way it smelled so much, I would use it on days when I wasn't working out, or doing much of anything. But sometimes...it would still stop working.
So for a while I gave up. I was using that Adidas stuff - at least I was fresh!
So for Tom's...you get a 4 out of 10. Your ingredients are noble, you smell like a dream...but I didn't after a few hours. And that is why you lose.

The Body Shop's "DeoDry" Dry Effect Deodorant

And then I found this. I saw a review in a discarded magazine at our campground. (Shut up...I was not garbage picking, someone had placed a pile for us all to enjoy - so I took half of them) They said they liked the Body Shop deodorant. My hope was renewed. I sang an impromptu dance number right there by the lake. OK that last part didn't happen. Except in my head.
So after vacation, I headed to good old Body Shop. At first, I picked up the liquid kind in the Chilled & Breezy scent. I returned it. The girl had suggested the liquid over the solid since it was less likely to leave white marks. But I HATE....HAAAAAAAATE standing in the bathroom with my arms in the air, waiting for my deodorant to dry. I also hated that Chilled & Breezy made me smell like I had mouthwash on my armpits. But I wasn't willing to give up...so I headed back and exchanged it for the solid deodorant in Fresh & Floral. And I fell in love. DeoDry contains volcanic minerals, which help absorb the excess wetness, and a bunch of essential oils, for a bunch of other things (technical, I know). The Fresh & Floral has a light floral scent, but nothing that overpowers my perfume or any others scents. It keeps me smelling fresh all day. It is wonderful! There aren't significant white marks that I have noticed.
The only downside is that the volcanic minerals can build up if you don't give your pits a good scrubbin' in the shower, and that can lead to clogged pores. Note I did not say clogged sweat glands. But I scrub my pits anyways...so I have found that to be a non-issue.
So DeoDry, I give you a 9 out of 10...and a big hug for saving the day!

On a side note...don't even bother with anything called a Crystal Stick. They all suck. The solid crystal stick - it sucks. The liquid crystal stick - it sucks. Try out Tom's; try the other kinds offered at Lush; try whatever, but save your money and ignore that crappy crystal stick. It stinks, and so will you.

So, (under)armed with this, head out and try some deodorants and throw that nasty Lady Speed Stick away! Maybe you are at the low end of the sweaty scale and can get away with the delightful smelling Tom's of Maine *sob*. I am still sad that one didn't work out...

Happy New Year!!!

Come and check out our new blog!

http://theecohousewives.wordpress.com

Here it is, another New Year! My plants are all either under a pile of snow, or frozen solid. Anything green or growing outside is still months away, but I still find myself dreaming of spring. In the meantime, I am excited to dive into some winter canning - those items that can be made year round. I am planning on whipping up some salsa and tomato sauce over the winter. Even though tomatoes can be grown here seasonally, I am ok with using some store bought ones to make up my own tomato sauce.

I got a new canning book for Christmas, maybe it is to blame for my renewed canning bug? My sister got me "Canning for a New Generation" by Liana Krissoff. I am in love with the bright bold pictures, the new take on old recipes, and the fact that EVERYTHING in the book can be canned using a traditional boiling method - no pressure cooker required for these recipes!

I highly recommend picking up a copy - a great way to get into canning your own food and condiments!
